The Ground of the Stadium
A public pavilion created in an unfamiliar setting.
A fortress-like space where sound, sight, and people flow together.
Task
Based on insights from the site study in Yangyang, the concept was shaped around people and the idea of a public pavilion. The design focused on a symmetrical structure and circulation, with graphic floor signage and carefully arranged furnishings guiding the eye and movement naturally through the space. The facade, rail table system, and signage were planned to create a shared, organic environment that communicates both information and experience.
When you picture a café in Yangyang, most would imagine the sea stretching out before them.
We too set out for Yangyang with that vision in mind.
But what greeted us was not the ocean, but a site surrounded by mountains and highways.
In that moment, we reimagined our design direction and named the project OAO, creating a concept of people and a fortress in an unfamiliar place.
The space was designed so that the sounds and scenes of people would fill it like waves,
with a symmetrical layout conveying both strength and a subtle sense of stability.
Above all, the heart of the space lay in its role as a public pavilion, where strangers share not only the space but also its furnishings.
양양의 카페를 떠올리면 누구나 눈앞에 바다가 시원하게 펼쳐진 그림 같은 장면을 먼저 상상할 것이다.
우리 역시 그런 풍경을 기대하며 양양으로 향했다.
그러나 우리가 도착한 현장은 바다가 아니라 산과 고속도로에 둘러싸인 낯선 곳이었다.
그 순간 우리는 상상의 바다 대신 새로운 디자인 방향을 고민하게 되었고,
이 프로젝트의 이름을 ‘오아오’라 짓고 사람과 낯선 곳의 요새라는 개념을 담아 공간을 기획했다.
사람과 사람이 어우러지는 장면과 소리가 바다의 파도처럼 공간을 채우도록 하고,
대칭적 구조를 통해 단단함과 낯선 안정감을 동시에 전하고자 했다.
무엇보다 낯선 이들이 공간과 집기를 공유하며 사용하는 공공 파빌리온의 철학이 공간의 핵심이 되었다.
The symmetrical layout allowed sound and sightlines to intersect and flow like waves, creating a rhythm through the space.
Seating areas and circulation paths were visually distinguished by graphic floor signage.
Low round tables, plants, and additional signage guided movement naturally.
Native plants representing Yangyang were placed to evoke the image of greenery growing between fortress stones.
Signage explained the meaning of the plants and the space, supporting shared understanding.
At the entrance, communal tables were divided into three smaller segments on each side,
with an under-table rail system that allowed them to be joined or separated as needed.
공간의 대칭은 양쪽 계단형 파빌리온을 통해 소리와 시선이 부딪히고 흐르도록 하여
파도 같은 리듬을 만들었다.
좌석 공간과 이동 동선은 바닥의 그래픽 사이니지를 통해 시각적으로 구분하였고,
둥글게 배치한 낮은 테이블과 식물, 사이니지는 자연스러운 동선을 안내하는 역할을 했다.
양양을 상징하는 식물을 배치해 성벽 틈 사이에 자라는 풀 같은 생명력을 담았으며,
사이니지를 통해 식물과 공간의 의미를 설명하며 정보를 공유했다.
입구 양쪽에 배치한 커뮤널 테이블은 각각 3개의 작은 테이블로 나누어지고,
하부 레일 시스템을 통해 필요에 따라 테이블을 결합하거나 분리할 수 있도록 설계했다.
The external facade was draped with canvas so that the entire structure would appear as a pavilion.
This facade was designed to give the impression of a hidden fortress, conveying a sense of tension and distinct character.
외부 파사드는 전면을 천막으로 감싸 건물 전체가 하나의 파빌리온처럼 보이도록 디자인했다.
이 파사드는 내부 공간이 요새처럼 숨겨져 있는 듯한 긴장감과 고유한 존재감을 전달하도록 했다.
