Messages from Light:Exhibition Visual Artwork
Exploring how light carries meaning. A visual interpretation of Joseon-era lighting objects reimagined for a modern exhibition.
Task
Directed and designed the main exhibition poster and outdoor visuals. This included photography of traditional lighting devices, hand-drawn typography, and layout construction based on tonal transitions between light and shadow.
For the joint exhibition by the National Folk Museum of Korea and Andong Folk Museum, CSUCSA Studio led the full design of the poster and outdoor visuals.
The theme, Messages from Light, is reinterpreted through the idea that light does not merely illuminate – it flows. And in that flow, messages emerge, gently delivered through gradients of brightness and shadow.
국립민속박물관과 안동민속박물관의 공동 기획 전시를 위해, CSUCSA 스튜디오는 포스터 및 야외 시각물 전반의 디자인을 총괄하였다.
‘빛의 메시지’라는 주제는 빛이 단순히 무언가를 비추는 것이 아니라, 흐른다는 개념으로 재해석되었다. 그 흐름 속에서 메시지가 생기고, 밝음과 어둠의 그라데이션을 타고 부드럽게 전달된다.
The poster’s composition draws on lighting devices from the Joseon era, alongside objects that once relied on them. These were placed in varying zones of light and darkness, allowing their silhouettes and meanings to shift in intensity, mirroring how we receive and interpret symbolic messages today.
The layout explores a visual boundary – where light fades into dark within the same space, rather than depicting a fixed beam or spotlight. Typography was created by hand to soften the viewer’s experience and connect emotionally with the theme.
포스터의 구성은 조선시대의 조명 기구와, 그 빛 아래에 놓였던 오브제들을 기반으로 한다. 이들은 서로 다른 명암의 구역에 배치되어, 빛의 세기에 따라 실루엣과 의미가 변화하는 과정을 보여준다. 이는 오늘날 우리가 상징을 해석하고 감각하는 방식과도 연결된다.
레이아웃은 고정된 조명이나 직선의 빛이 아닌, 동일한 공간 안에서 점차 어두워지는 경계를 탐구하며 완성되었다. 타이포그래피는 전시의 감정선을 부드럽게 전달하기 위해 손글씨로 제작되었고, 주제와의 정서적 연결을 돕는다.
