A café space that takes inspiration from the bold sliced form of a mountain, where the raw beauty of exposed materials meets the flowing harmony of modern light, creating a dynamic and inviting atmosphere that tells the story of creative courage.

MAL Coffee Bar was designed by CSUCSA STUDIO as a space that goes beyond a simple café and embodies the spirit and mindset of creators who challenge boundaries. The name MAL comes from the initials of Marc-André Leclerc, a legendary free solo climber, symbolizing the courage to explore new creative territories. The design draws inspiration from the sliced cross-section of a mountain, highlighting dynamic tension through angled cuts and structural forms, while exposed concrete, cement, and steel reveal the layers of time. Modern barrisol lighting integrates past materials with contemporary light technology to create a harmonious spatial experience.

엠에이엘 커피바는 수사스튜디오에서 설계한 공간으로, 단순한 카페를 넘어 창작자의 정신과 태도를 담아낸 상징적 장소로 완성하였다. 브랜드명 엠에이엘(MAL)은 맨손 등반의 전설 마크 앙드레 르클렉(Marc-André Leclerc)의 이름에서 앞 글자를 따온 것으로, 한계를 넘어서며 새로운 영역에 도전하는 창작자의 정신을 공간 전체에 녹여냈다. 디자인은 산의 절단면에서 모티프를 얻어 사선으로 잘린 듯한 단면과 그 안에 드러난 구조적 긴장감을 표현하였으며, 콘크리트와 시멘트, 철골을 그대로 노출해 건축의 시간성을 드러내고 바리솔 조명을 통해 과거의 재료와 현대적 빛의 기술이 조화를 이루는 공간으로 설계하였다.

The barrisol lighting was created to reflect the soft, scattered light seen on desert dunes.
To enhance this effect, the ceiling lighting was carefully designed, and the space was intentionally shielded from natural light coming from the outside.
The upward-facing barrisol lighting creates subtle gradients on the walls, and these gradients, combined with the structure, make the space feel rich in depth and dimension.

바리솔 조명은 사막 언덕에 스며드는 빛과 반사되는 햇살의 부드러운 흐름을 표현하기 위해 설계되었다.
이 효과를 더욱 극대화하기 위해 천장의 조명을 세심하게 디자인하고, 외부에서 들어오는 자연광을 최대한 차단하여 공간 안의 빛을 철저히 통제하였다.
업라이트 형태의 바리솔 조명은 벽면에 은은한 그라데이션을 만들어내며, 이 빛의 흐름이 구조와 만나 공간을 한층 더 깊고 입체적으로 보이게 한다.

The entire concept of MAL Coffee Bar focused on controlling and minimizing natural light.
This approach allows visitors to feel the flow of time inside the space while encouraging them to immerse fully in the experience.
The windows were deliberately designed to be irregular and small, ensuring that light enters only in controlled amounts and directing the gaze exactly as intended.

엠에이엘 커피바는 공간 안에 들어온 사람들이 온전히 이곳에 집중하고, 시간의 흐름과 공간의 본질을 느낄 수 있도록 자연광을 최소화하는 데 집중하였다.
창은 의도적으로 불규칙하고 작게 설계해 빛의 유입과 시선의 흐름을 치밀하게 조율하였으며, 이를 통해 공간의 몰입감을 극대화하고자 했다.

The façade of MAL Coffee Bar was designed to evoke the gentle curves of a desert dune, with a rounded form that subtly rises forward.
The entire façade uses metal to reveal only a soft silhouette that shifts with the light, allowing the structure to blend with its surroundings while maintaining a sense of mystery.
Instead of a freestanding sign, the signage was applied as film to highlight the character of the aged building and ensure it integrates naturally with the façade.

엠에이엘 커피바의 파사드는 사막언덕의 곡선을 연상시키는 형태로, 앞으로 완만하게 솟아오른 구조로 설계하였다.
전체 파사드는 금속 재질을 사용해 빛에 따라 은은한 형체만 드러나도록 하였으며, 의도적으로 실루엣이 중심이 되도록 디자인하였다.
사이니지는 별도의 구조물을 세우기보다 시트지를 활용해 오래된 건물 외관의 멋스러움을 더욱 강조하며 파사드와 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 하였다.
