Duality of Light and Material

Space Design
In South Korea, commercial spaces are thriving not only in major cities but also in regions driven by industrial and manufacturing hubs. These areas are defined by the coexistence of two generations, shaping a unique consumer culture where brand presence is deeply intertwined with experience. For B Brand’s flagship store, we envisioned a design that encapsulates the duality of light and material—a space where textures, contrasts, and light interplay to create an immersive brand narrative.

1. Space Composition: Light, Metal, and Structural Flow The walls are clad in matte stainless steel (SUS), creating a minimal and refined backdrop while allowing light to subtly transform the space throughout the day. Unlike reflective surfaces, the muted finish absorbs and diffuses light, introducing a dynamic interplay between shadow and illumination. To enhance product focus, partition walls were strategically placed, forming independent sections that elevate the presence of each item. A cylindrical metal pillar anchors the store’s center, housing a concealed fitting room within. This structural element is not just an architectural feature—it acts as a spatial regulator, optimizing circulation and flow within a compact retail environment.

2. Contrast of Texture and Color: Coldness and Warmth The ceiling integrates a square aluminum grid louver, subtly referencing Eastern architectural aesthetics while diffusing light in rhythmic patterns. The flooring, made from natural coastal stone, provides a grounding contrast to the sleek metallic surfaces. This juxtaposition between industrial precision and organic solidity reinforces the tactile and visual depth of the space. The key accent color, Yee Blue, introduces warmth and vibrancy, breaking the monochrome austerity of the metal elements. A raised platform wrapped in blue carpet enhances the perception of elevation, creating a psychological transition into the brand’s curated experience.

3. Lighting and Display: A Store That Transforms from Day to Night To redefine product presentation, integrated lighting within the hanging system casts a downward glow, making garments appear to float in midair. After business hours, this lighting strategy turns the space into an ethereal installation, visually separating the brand from conventional retail environments. Externally, the building functions as an illuminated sculpture. The façade, enveloped in soft fabric and light, radiates a gentle glow, creating the impression of a floating, luminous mass within the urban landscape. This not only enhances visibility but also serves as an architectural extension of the brand’s identity, leaving a lasting imprint on passersby.
